Kava Tips and Tricks

How to get the best effects from from your kava

If you follow our kava tips and tricks, you should get the maximum effect (and pleasure) from your kava.

Drinking kava and getting the best out of the experience essentially comes down to three factors:

  1. The QUALITY
  2. The PREPARATION
  3. The DRINKING METHOD

So, let’s look at these in more detail….

Image of man with a "No!"-type expression on his face with caption Only Drink Noble Variety Kava The QUALITY

When you buy kava, anything other than noble variety kava shouldn’t normally be consumed. Although wild kava is sometimes used for medicinal purposes by indigenous Ni-Vanuatu, we recommend that you, the reader, stay away from it.

Here’s a great explanation from Australia Kava Shop of what exactly is meant by ‘wild kava: “Wild Kava is commonly known as Tu Dei (Two Day) or Isa, is a quick yielding kava variety. In the past two decades of kava research it is generally understood that these varieties are unsafe for drinking. They are normally high in the DHM and DHK kava lactones which can be traced to some hepatoxic issues.  It is called Tu-Dei (Two Day) kava as it is known to give you a kava hangover for up to 2 days.”

Our final recommendation on this topic is that you should always ensure that the kava that you buy online is certified. If it is, this will guarantee the quality of what you are buying.

There are two types of kava to address when we talk about its preparation – Kava Powder and Instant Kava.

KAVA POWDER

How to make kava – To get the most out of your kava powder preparation and Super Charge it, you will need:

  • Kava Powder
  • Straining Bag
  • Warm Water
  • Full Cream Milk or other full cream dairy product
  • Food Processor/Blender
  • Preparation bowl, serving bowl, ladle and some music!
  • 40 minutes – but only 15 of those are actual work.

STEP 1.

Follow the instructions on the packet to get the quantities of water and kava needed. Place these two ingredients into a shaker, Food Ninja or blender holder;

STEP 2.

Once that’s done, seal the holder and shake the mix for 10-15 seconds and then place in the fridge – for 4 hours or more;

STEP 3.

Remove the holder from the fridge and put 1 teaspoon of full cream dairy product into the mix and then give the mix a 30-second blast in your mixer.

STEP 4.

Pour the mixture into a straining bag and squeeze for 5 minutes, instead of the usual 10 minutes.

Enjoy your kava 20% stronger and in half the time.

ALTERNATIVE METHOD

NOTE: Use the exact same ingredients as above.

STEP 1.

Follow the instructions on the packet to get the quantities of water and kava needed. Make sure that you use warm water, no hotter than C50 degrees. Place these two ingredients into a shaker such as the AluBall Kava Shaker, Food Ninja or blender and blend for 10 seconds;

STEP 2.

Once that’s done, let the mix stand for 40 minutes or more;

STEP 3.

Put 1 teaspoon of full cream dairy product into the mix and then give it a 1-2 minutes blast in your mixer.

STEP 4.

Pour the mixture into a straining bag and squeeze for 10 minutes.

The combination of the dairy product additive, the 1-2 minutes blasting and the 10 minutes squeezing time will all work to make your kava stronger than normal. HAPPY DAYS!

The biggest appeal that Instant Kava has for most people is the lack of preparation time needed. Totally understandable given the hectic and often stressful times that we experience daily.

So, all you need to do is put a level teaspoon into 100ml of water, or your favourite juice or shake per serve, (we call that “a shell”), stir for 10 seconds and then drink! How easy is that?!

A TIP TO MAKE IT STRONGER:

After mixing it, let it stand for 10 minutes to allow for the release of more of the active kava ingredient (kavalactones), stir for 10 seconds again before drinking and VOILA! – There you have it!

LAST, BUT DEFINITELY NOT LEAST, three more ripping TIPS FOR YOU:

First – don’t drink your kava too soon after a heavy meal. One to two hours afterwards is fine as you will feel the greater effects of your kava drink on an empty stomach.

Secondly, Don’t drink alcohol with your kava as doing so will dilute the effects of the kava.

Finally, drinking kava is the best social tonic there is. Whether it’s with your partner, family or a group of friends, you might like to try one of our kava cocktail recipes on our sister site – Buy Kava Online (my personal favourite is the Mango Kava Cocktail).
